To enter into a grant funding agreement with
the Environment Agency for the £400,000.00 Council
contribution towards the Capital Coast Protection Maintenance
Project as approved by the Joint Strategic Committee on the 8th
July 2025

Reasons for the decision

The £400,000.00 funding is the Borough
Councils match funding contribution to the Environment Agency led
coastal defence capital maintenance project (circa
£5,000,000.00) undertaking repairs to existing timber groynes
to extend their life span for a further ten years as part of a
long-term coastal defence plan.

Alternative options considered

In consultation with the Environment Agency
the proposed project was taken forward to ensure current coastal
defence protection will remain until a long-term action plan is
formulated. Alternative options would have been ‘no
action’ which would have seen further erosion and likely
breaching of the defence and flooding or ‘full
replacement’ which is financially uneconomical at this
time.
