Purpose

A legislative change has meant that Councillors now have access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Council on 14th May 2026 agreed to delegate to the Monitoring Officer to make this change to the Constitution when the legislation came into force.

Decision

Agree an addition to the Member Allowances Scheme in the Constitution to include reference to this change, as set out below;

1. Access to Local Government Pension Scheme:

a. Councillors shall be entitled to a pension in accordance with a scheme made under the Local Government Pension Scheme (Amendment) (Elected Member Pensions) Regulations 2026, and

b. the basic allowance or special responsibility allowance (or both, as the case may be) shall be treated as an amount in respect of which such a pension is payable.
