Durham County Council Archaeology Section annually prepares and updates a Standards document to reflect changes in heritage practice, new techniques, or changes in policy and/or legislation. Our standards are drawn from both national policy and legislation, and also a range of professional standards from national heritage and archaeological bodies. They are prepared to ensure that archaeological work undertaken within the county is carried out to a consistent, transparent, and professional standard. These Standards aid in promoting and safeguarding the historic environment in our region, and ensure that the knowledge gained through collaborative archaeological investigation is available for the benefit of the residents of County Durham and Darlington, and the wider community. All persons, companies and/or institutions carrying our archaeological works in the county will apply and abide by these standards. Durham County Council Archaeology Section will monitor compliance through normal business procedures. This decision is to approve the latest version of the Standards Document
