Summary

...to address the difficulty care leavers face in accessing private rentals due to a lack of guarantors, a rent guarantor scheme was approved, with a maximum rent of £700 per month, to enable them to secure housing.

Full council record

Purpose

Usually if you try to rent from a private landlord the landlord or agency will ask you for a guarantor, unless you earn more than 4 times the rent per month. The guarantor is the Landlord’s insurance policy against a tenant’s default of payment of rent. Often people's parents act as their guarantor but if young people have spent time in local
authority care this may not be an option for them

Due to the demand on social housing nationally and locally we needed look at other options, and the private section was an area in which our care leavers could not access without such a scheme.

Decision

To approve a rent guarantor scheme (further details available within the attached ODR)

Alternative options considered

The above provision is part of several other options we are considering, which include an increase in social tenancies on new building estates, further collaboration with Doncaster Housing for Young People (DYHP) and support Lodgings.
