Purpose

Background
A key element of achieving a regenerative borough is to live well
within our planetary boundaries and recognise that our wellbeing is
linked to the wellbeing of the planet. We all live within, and must
not exceed, the planet’s natural resources (DDT).
In 2019, the Mayor of Doncaster declared a Climate and Biodiversity
Emergency.
In 2020 Doncaster agreed an Environmental and Sustainability
Strategy to tackle the emergency and deliver a range of
environmental improvements. A target has been set to: ‘Become
carbon neutral by 2040, recognising that this equates to a uniform
13-14% year-on-year reduction of emissions and an 85% reduction by
2030 (compared to a baseline of 2005 levels), and increase the
proportion of land given over to woodland, wood pasture, wildflower
grassland and thus support greater biodiversity.’
In pursuit of these goals and actions within the Environment and
Sustainability Strategy to support this City of Doncaster Council
(CDC) and stakeholders are exploring the potential for a UNESCO
Biosphere Reserve centred around important nature conservation
sites in the Borough.
A Biosphere Reserve is a multi-stakeholder partnership delivery
model for sustainable development, integrating not only protecting
nature but enhancing it while allowing communities to thrive and
develop both economically, socially and culturally.
