About

The Local Government Act 2000 enables Councils to delegate certain decisions to individual Members.  The legislation sought to improve the transparency of the decision-making process and support the role of the Cabinet.   Individual Cabinet Members may make decisions if the nature of the decision falls within the requirements specified in the Individual Cabinet Member Decision Making Protocol; otherwise the Cabinet must take the decision.  In order to preserve transparency and accountability in the individual decision-making process the same procedures must be followed in terms of preparing a report and the level of information within it as with a decision by the Cabinet itself.   The Individual Cabinet Member Decision Making Protocol is set out under Part 6 – Codes and Protocols of the Council’s Constitution.
