Purpose
SAL - Sailing for All
Redoubt sailing club aims to give everybody in the
District the opportunity
to sail.
Many young people and adults could benefit from
learning to sail, initially
through taster sessions. Although the club is run by
a volunteer team the
basic costs to run taster sessions to introduce
people to sailing (trained
instructors, insurance, sailing equipment and
clothing, safety boat running
including fuel, lake hire) make costs prohibitive
for many.
Subsidising the taster sessions themselves and
funding the training of
new instructors, who will go on to deliver more
taster sessions, will reduce
the price of these sessions making them more
accessible to all.
The grant will support more children (from age 8)
and adults in the Hythe
and Folkestone District to build sailing skills in a
safe environment through
taster sessions. This will be achieved through (a)
running subsidised half
day taster sessions for 20 individuals by using the
grant to pay £14 per
person towards the total cost of £24 and (b)
provide subsidised dinghy
instructor training so that more taster sessions can
be provided at
reduced
cost.
Decision
To provide
funding of £750.00 to the above project.
Reason for decision:
Having been a sailing instructor I am have a good
knowledge of the
benefits of sailing for young people and their
families. It promotes a
healthy lifestyle and teaches young people skills in
resilience and
teamwork. I have no hesitation in recommending this
award which aims
to make sailing more
accessible to a wider group of people
