Full council record

Purpose

Folkestone Community Fridge -

Development of community fridge to further reduce
food waste and support

more people in need to receive free healthy
food.

Awarded monies will contribute towards volunteer
training, core team project

management hours, furniture for library and
additional food surplus from food
waste charity fareshare during low-supply weeks

Decision

To provide funding of £150.00 to the above
project.

Reason for decision:

In the first 12 months of the fridge
being open, we:

- saved over 40 tonnes of food from
going to landfill

- had 1040 visits on average per
month, helping over 40 visitors a day to access fresh food for
free, which would otherwise have been wasted - collected surplus
food from 14 different retailers (with many more to come on board)
across 37 collectors shifts each week

- trained over 35 volunteers in Level
II hygiene and safety which is transferable to range of industry
settings

Furthermore, the feedback and
evidence suggests a need for much more
activity to help reduce food waste and food
Poverty.
