Purpose

STEER is an established violence prevention and early intervention programme that provides intensive one-to-one mentoring and tailored support to young people at risk of involvement in serious violence and child criminal exploitation. Through structured mentoring, positive activities, goal setting, resilience-building interventions and practical support, the programme seeks to reduce risk-taking behaviours, strengthen protective factors and improve outcomes for vulnerable young people.

The programme supports young people to identify and achieve personal goals, improve pro-social skills, develop coping mechanisms and build resilience. The intervention is designed to divert young people away from violence and exploitation and towards positive education, training and community opportunities.

The funding will enable continuity of delivery of a proven and established intervention across Greater Manchester and ensure that vulnerable young people continue to receive support during the funding period.

Decision

GMCA (Violence Reduction Unit) wishes to award Salford Foundation £96,000 via a Grant Funding Agreement to support the continuation of the STEER programme, providing one-to-one mentoring and targeted support to young people aged 10–17 who are at risk of serious youth violence and child criminal exploitation across Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Tameside, Salford and Wigan.
