Planting of c5000 trees to create a new area
of woodland at the eastern end of Tyting Farm. The new woodland
contributes to objectives to provide Biodiversity Net Gain at
Tyting Farm. The woodland is planted according to a method known as
Miyawaki planting which results in notably greater survival rates
for new planting but more significantly it vastly accelerates the
growth of the trees. This increases carbon storage but in line with
the primary objective for biodiversity provides a fully functioning
species rich woodland within years rather than centuries. This is
of immense benefit to species including invertebrates and mammals
such as hazel dormice. The new woodland area also provides visual
amenity to the SANG path and more wildlife for public interaction
with nature.
Reasons for the decision
The Miyawaki woodland creation enhances the
natural environment including:
biodiversity, wildlife habitats and nature recovery. As well as
increasing carbon storage and providing public amenity benefit for
visitors to Tyting Farm.
Corporate Strategy
2024-2034
Our Corporate
Strategy: A Greener, Fairer, Thriving Guildford
A more sustainable
borough
Outcome: Improve biodiversity and preserve the natural
environment
We will manage our
parks and open spaces to enhance biodiversity, maintaining
Guildford borough’s natural environments, and restore
wildlife habitats. In supporting nature recovery, we will look to
restore habitats, protect wildlife, and combat climate change.
Alternative options considered
'None'.
(Not carrying out the work would result in failing to provide
Biodiversity Net Gain affecting funding for the site and overall
plans to provide a habitat bank for BNG at this site)
