RESOLVED:

1.      That this
Council:

a)      recognises the vital importance of early detection
in saving lives from prostate cancer, which is now the most common
cancer in men in the UK;

b)      notes with concern that,
unlike breast cancer screening for women, there is no comparable
national screening programme for
prostate cancer, despite evidence that early identification
significantly improves treatment outcomes;

c)      believes that this unequal
provision leaves men, particularly those most at risk,
disadvantaged and unnecessarily vulnerable, and
therefore;

d)      calls on the Cabinet and
Chief Executive to write to the Secretary of State for Health and
Social Care urging the Government to support calls for a routine,
accessible prostate cancer screening programme; and

e)      further asks that the
Council works with local NHS partners, charities and community
groups to raise awareness of prostate cancer risks and the
importance of early testing until such a programme is in place.
