Purpose

To approve the designation of Marland Wood as a site of Biological Importance

Decision

Consideration was given to a report which sought approval to designate Marland Wood, Bamford, as a Site of Biological Importance (SBI).

Members were advised that the Greater Manchester Ecology Unit (GMEU) annually recommend new SBIs and changes to existing designations. The latest review undertaken by GMEU had recommended a new SBI be designated at Marland Wood, Bamford. 

Two parcels of ancient woodland habitat had been identified to the south of the River Roch, north of Marland Fold.  The site would be assigned grade A status (county and regional importance).  An existing SBI (A627M by Tandle Hill) was to be removed as the habitat had changed due to natural succession.

Resolved: 

1. That the Marland Wood, Bamford be approved as a designated new Site of Biological Importance to allow the nature conservation interest of the area to be taken into account when planning applications were considered.
2. That it be noted the designated Site of Biological Importance at A627M by Tandle Hill was to be removed due to natural processes.

Reasons for decision

The decision was in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework, supporting planning outcomes that enhanced the natural and local environment through the protection of valued biodiversity sites. It recognised that areas identified as having local biodiversity importance should be safeguarded in planning decisions.

Alternatives considered

Not to support the proposed Site of Biological Interest designation – this option would leave key habitats vulnerable to loss and damage from development.
