The Head of Service, Business Sheffield and the Co-Chair of the Diverse Business Board were in attendance to present a report on the Diverse Business Advisory Board including an update on its progress, impact and next steps. The Diverse Business Advisory Board (DBAB) was established in 2022 by Business Sheffield, in partnership with the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, in response to recommendations made by the Sheffield Race Equality Commission (REC). The report provided an overview of the Board’s development, achievements and future priorities.

RESOLVED: That the Economic Development, Skills and Culture Policy Committee:

a)    Notes the progress made by the Diverse Business Advisory Board during its first four years of operation

b)    Notes the Board’s contribution to improving engagement with diverse businesses, informing Council policy and supporting more inclusive economy growth

c)    Notes the Board’s future priorities and ongoing programme of activity, including work relating to procurement, access to finance and business engagement

d)    Notes the continued partnership between Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Board members in delivering the Board’s objectives

e)    Endorses the continued work of the Diverse Business Advisory Board

Reasons for Decision

1. 3.1

The Diverse Business Advisory Board was established in response to recommendations made by the Sheffield Race Equality Commission and has become an important mechanism through which diverse businesses can influence policy, service delivery and economic development activity.

The report provides Members with an update on progress, achievements and future priorities and demonstrates how the Board continues to support the Council's ambition to deliver a more inclusive economy that works for all communities.

The report also seeks endorsement of the Board's continued role as a strategic advisory forum, supporting the development of Council policy, informing economic development activity and strengthening engagement with Sheffield's diverse business community.

Alternatives Considered and Rejected

1. 4.1

The option of not continuing the Diverse Business Advisory Board has been considered. This option is not recommended as it would remove an established mechanism for engagement with diverse businesses and would reduce the Council’s ability to receive direct feedback from under-represented business communities on issues affecting economic growth, business support and access to opportunities. The recommended option is to continue supporting the Board and its future programme of activity, recognising the positive impact it has delivered during its first four years of operation.
