The Children and Families Scrutiny Committee
RESOLVED to convey to the Executive that:
The Committee welcomed the report
but asked that future Public Health reporting on physical activity
places equal emphasis on children and young people, and families,
rather than focusing predominantly on older adults.
The Committee emphasised the
importance of linking the work with schools, early years settings,
the Children and Young People’s Plan, the Youth Strategy and
SEND provision.
The Committee highlighted the need
to ensure that physical activity initiatives take account of
rurality, access, cost and transport challenges faced by
families.
The Committee requested that best
practice and local opportunities for children, young people and
families be shared more widely, including through communication
routes that do not rely solely on digital platforms.
The Committee asked that the service
strengthen its links with the Youth Strategy and other existing
programmes to ensure older children and teenagers are fully
included and supported.
The Committee agreed that realistic,
meaningful objectives should be set for young people and families
by recognising that needs and starting points differ across
Somerset communities.
