Purpose

Shared prosperity funding for green space
improvements

The
Government has launched a £2.6 billion national Shared
Prosperity Fund (SPF) that aims to empower local communities to
deliver projects that can be targeted to where it is needed most
and will improve pride in place. The funding must be spent by March
2025. In Cambridgeshire the funding is administered by the
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority and South
Cambridgeshire District Council has initially received
£150,000 for these green space projects. A further
£25,000 has been added to this scheme from underspend on
another SPF project.

Agreement to invest in improvements at four green
spaces on land proposed by parish councils through an application
process:

Sites
were submitted by Parish/Town Councils from across the district
through an application process and were scored using a detailed
scoring matrix. The sites

a.
Play Area on the Recreation Ground, Little
Shelford - this site has a
children’s play area that is regularly in use. The fencing
has fallen into disrepair due to the location of the cricket pitch.
The fencing requires repairs and improvements to ensure that the
site remains safe for children and families at
all times.

b.
Land adjacent to the A603/Cambridge
Road, Barton - this site provides a
much-needed sound and pollution barrier for the entrance to the
village but has become overgrown and in need of additional care.
The intention is for additional tree planting, clearance of
undergrowth, and planting of wildflowers to aid
biodiversity.

c.
Land at Rear of Cemetery, Ickleton
- This site is currently in the process of being
purchased by the Parish Council, with the intention to expand the
site and include a peaceful seating area amongst a wildflower
meadow.

d.
Land on the corner of The Rowans and Cambridge
Road, Milton - this site is on the corner
of the main road through Milton and provides a medium sized grassy
area in a clearing of trees. The main road is separated from the
site by a hedge, and the intention is to expand this site into a
small informal park space and seating area.

Agreement in principle to assist with 2 additional
projects should funding allow.

Two
additional sites were scored highly based on their applications and
would benefit from any remaining funding allocation. These sites
are 1. Land at Hurdleditch Road, Orwell and 2. St Vincent’s
Close, Girton. Agreement that any funding
remaining after delivery of the four initial projects, to be used
towards works at these sites.
