Purpose

A report was presented to
Cabinet proposing that expenditure be approved for the delivery of
the Broadstairs Flood and Coast Protection Scheme. The scheme will
improve flood and erosion protection for the benefit of residential
properties, and the beach and jetty at Viking Bay. This scheme is
included in the 2023/24 capital programme and is 100% funded via an
Environment Agency grant in the value of £880k.

Decision

Cabinet approved expenditure in relation to
this scheme and up to the value of the Environment Agency grant of
£880k.

Reasons for the decision

To ensure mitigation is undertaken against the
flood and erosion risks at Broadstairs.

Alternative options considered

The alternative, not to deliver this fully
grant funded flood defence scheme was rejected as it would likely
result in withdrawal of the grant offer and a continuation of the
increase in flood and erosion risk at Broadstairs.
