• Member of staff “A” is
currently in the process of completing the social work degree
course via the local authority traineeship.
• “A”s substantive post has been made redundant
via the review of Early Intervention and Prevention services within
the local authority.
• There is a national shortage of qualified social work staff.
The traineeship within the local authority aims to redress this and
support staff development into the social work profession.
• Should “A” be made redundant then the initial
outlay of investment will have been lost, and “A” would
be unable to continue the social work degree course.
• Upon completion of the social work degree course,
“A” will be contractually bound to remain as a social
worker within the local authority for at least three years.
• “A” completing the degree and being employed as
a qualified social worker will reduce the longer-term potential of
agency staff being required, and in the medium to longer term will
render financial benefits for the local authority.
