Purpose

To seek permission to site a
memorial honoring members of the Welsh Guards who served and those who gave
their lives during operations in Afghanistan

Content

RESOLVED – That,
subject to planning permission, Executive Board approve the siting of a
memorial in the Garden of Remembrance, Wrexham, to honour the Welsh Guards who
served and sacrificed their lives during operations in Afghanistan.

Reasons for Decision

(i) The regiment’s historic and
enduring ties to Wrexham

(ii) The absence of a dedicated Welsh Guards Afghanistan
public memorial in Wales for these fallen soldiers.

(iii) The emotional and symbolic importance of providing a
place of reflection and remembrance for families, veterans, and the wider community
impacted by the conflict.

(iv) The alignment of the proposed
memorial with existing commemorative installations, enhancing the Memorial
Garden’s role as a focal point for remembrance

(v) The fact that funding has already been secured by the
Welsh Guards, with the proposal subject to standard planning procedures.

(vi) Approval of this application
would not only honour the memory of those lost but also reaffirm Wrexham’s
commitment to recognising the service and sacrifice of its military community.
