Elmbridge Museum Store Move

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Outcome: Recommendations Approved

Is Key Decision?: Yes

Is Callable In?: Yes

Date of Decision: July 14, 2025

Purpose: Elmbridge Museum cares for a collection of c.43,000 objects which is currently stored in two off-site facilities, Luxfords located in Weybridge and Elmgrove Hall located in Walton-on-Thames. Elmbridge Museum needs to re-locate its collection that is currently stored on the Elmgrove site to Luxfords. This move is essential in order to retain its Arts Council England accreditation and to provide vacant possession for the forthcoming Elmgrove redevelopment project. The report also proposes that a longer-term option be further explored to work in partnership to relocate Elmbridge museum’s whole collection onto the Brooklands Museum site ahead of the forthcoming Surrey wide local government reorganisation.

Content: Resolved that   (a)       a new supplementary revenue estimate of £43,000 annual funding be approved to cover the additional ongoing rental costs arising from moving out of Elm Grove into Luxfords; and   (b)       further discussions with Brooklands Museum be supported and the undertaking of a feasibility study to develop a new Brooklands Museum storage / community facility on the Brooklands site alongside considering the implications of the emerging new heritage portfolio created by the forthcoming Surrey-wide Local Government Reorganisation, be explored.
