Motion - Getting Things Done – Paving the way Investing to Repair our Roads and Pavements

Decision Maker: Council

Outcome: Recommendations Approved

Is Key Decision?: No

Is Callable In?: No

Date of Decision: December 3, 2025

Purpose:

Content: Council Notes:   1.    That the condition of our streets, pavements and roads consistently ranks among one of the top concerns raised by local residents. 2.    That this Labour led Council believes that well maintained roads and pavements are not a luxury but a necessity, enabling safer journeys for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, bus passengers; supporting local businesses, and preventing costly future repairs for motorists and all transport users. 3.    That the Council stands shoulder to shoulder with all communities across the Borough, delivering the public investment they deserve despite the tough financial conditions that Councils are currently facing. By acting now, we will support our high streets and local economies by providing reliable, well maintained and high-quality roads and footways. 4.    That in the 2025/2026 budget the Council doubled the road resurfacing budget, investing £1.6 million to resurface roads and pavements across wards in every part of the borough from Eltham to Greenwich and Plumstead to Thamesmead. 5.    That Dobell Road, Tunnel Avenue, Dumbreck Road, Constitution Rise, Moordown, Earl Rise, Heverham Road, Grovebury Road, Grangehill Road, Nithdale Road, Bentham Road, Timbercroft Lane and Greenwich High Road have already re-surfaced this year with Spekehill, Woodcroft, Larchwood Road, Perpins Road, Well Hall Parade, Bassant Road, Heathfield Terrace and Bostall Manorway in the pipeline for re-surfacing. 6.    That this Council will be investing in well-maintained roads and pavements so that every journey is safer and smoother for all forms of transportation.    Council Believes:   1.    That every councillor should support this motion that will transform local roads and pavements across the borough, putting safety and quality maintenance at the heart of our transport network, supporting growth and placemaking.   Council Resolves therefore to:   ·        Invest a total of £8 million over the next five years on road and pavement resurfacing. ·        Invest in our pavements to encourage pedestrianisation and have safe and high-quality footpaths. ·        Fill hundreds more potholes, cutting emergency repairs and keeping vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists safe. ·        Embed proactive maintenance into our highway's strategy to repair our roads in the most cost-effective and efficient way possible.
