Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Wiltshire and are not the council. About us
The Melksham Area Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday 27 May 2026 was set to cover a range of community matters, including updates from key partners like Wiltshire Police, discussions on local funding applications, and reports from sub-groups focused on highways and health and wellbeing. The meeting also included the appointment of lead members to various outside bodies and working groups.
Key Partner Updates
The meeting was scheduled to receive updates from invited partners, including Wiltshire Police and local Town and Parish Councils. The Wiltshire Police update was expected to cover their Spring 2026 report on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), detailing ongoing work such as Project Vigilant and efforts to tackle stalking and domestic abuse. Community First was also due to provide a monthly update, highlighting their work with youth clubs, village halls, and initiatives like Voice It, Hear It
and the Building Bridges
programme. Wessex Community Action was set to present a briefing note on the challenges facing Wiltshire's voluntary and community sector, outlining concerns about financial strain and rising demand, and proposing actions to support its sustainability. The Wiltshire Community Lottery launch was also on the agenda, presented as an initiative to generate revenue for local good causes.
Area Board Funding
The board was scheduled to consider applications for funding across three streams: Community Area Grants, Youth Grants, and Older and Vulnerable People Grants. Several applications were listed for Community Area Grants, including requests from Keevil Village Folk Night for sound equipment, the 1st Bowerhill Scout Group for a shipping container, and the Melksham Scout Group for a replacement heating system. The Bowerhill Ladies Group had applied for an Older and Vulnerable People Grant for a summer coach outing. The remaining budgets for these grants were noted as £22,732.00 for Community Area Grants, £18,616.00 for Young People Grants, and £7,700.00 for Older and Vulnerable People Grants.
Sub-Group Reports
Reports were scheduled from several sub-groups. The Local Highways and Footpath Improvement Group (LHFIG) was set to present minutes and recommendations from their meeting on 7 May 2026. These included recommendations to allocate £400.00 for verge marker posts on Halifax Road in Bowerhill and £500.00 for flood warning signs on Mill Lane, Broughton Gifford. Updates were also expected from the Melksham Health & Wellbeing Group and the Melksham Local Youth Network.
Appointments
The meeting was scheduled to address appointments to Outside Bodies and working groups for the 2026/27 period. This included considering the appointment of lead members for roles such as Area Board Environment Lead and Youth Lead, as well as appointing a Lead Member for the Local Highways and Footpath Improvement Group (LHFIG). The Terms of Reference for the LHFIG were also to be noted.
