The Sutton South, Cheam and Belmont Local Committee was scheduled to discuss community initiatives, local funding, and public concerns. The meeting's agenda included a showcase by a women's and girls' cricket club, an update on the Neighbourhood Fund, and an overview of other community events.
Community Showcase: Overton Park Women and Girls Cricket Club
The meeting was scheduled to feature a community showcase by the Overton Park Women and Girls Cricket Club. The club's founder was expected to present the community cricket opportunities available for women and girls in the area.
Neighbourhood Fund
Details regarding the Neighbourhood Fund were scheduled to be presented. This item was intended to allow for participation in establishing local priorities and identifying potential beneficiaries of the fund.
Other Funding and Community Events
An overview of events taking place in the local area was planned. This segment aimed to provide information on various community activities and potentially other funding avenues.
Public Questions
An opportunity for members of the public to raise questions about local issues was scheduled. Questions were to be submitted in advance, with the possibility of a written response before the meeting and a follow-up question during the meeting. The report pack indicated that a question had been received from Beverley Brigden of the Shanklin Village Residents Association concerning a non-working street light. The response from Sarah Rye, Director of Highways, Transportation and Regulatory Services, indicated that an order had been raised with the Council's Tree Team to address vegetation clearance, with works expected by 10th July. Following this, a street lighting engineer would inspect the column to determine remedial action.
The meeting also included standard procedural items such as welcoming introductions, apologies for absence, declarations of interest, and the approval of minutes from the previous meeting held on 5 February 2026. A session for any urgent business, as defined by the Local Government Act 1972, was also on the agenda. The date of the next meeting was scheduled for 3 September 2026.
The attendees included Councillor Melody Thorpe (Chair), Councillor Rashi Barsaiyan (Vice-Chair), and Councillors Chandra Alapati, Joseph Barkham, Richard Clifton, Trish Fivey, Asif Hirani, Shimino Jesudas, and Louise Phelan. A number of community representatives were also listed as non-voting attendees, including Stephen Phillips from the Belmont Allotment Association, Peter Mattey from the Belmont and South Cheam Residents Association, Graham Jones from CHAPRA, Christine Laidlaw from the Cheam Chamber of Trade, Patricia Simons from the Highfields Residents' Association, Hannah Witkowska from the South Sutton Neighbourhood Association, Raj Kondapalli and Lisa Webster from Sutton South Neighbourhood Watch, Ian Berry and Angela Francis from the Tudor Close Residents' Association and Friends of Cheam Park, Beverley Brigden from the Shanklin Residents Association, and Louisa Sheridan-Peel and Lance Sheridan-Peel from the Westmoreland Orbit Residents Association.
The meeting was scheduled to take place at the Carshalton Beeches Baptist Free Church, Banstead Road, Carshalton SM5 3NL.
