Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Greater London Authority and are not the council. About us
The Police and Crime Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday 17 June 2026 to discuss a range of policing and crime-related matters. A key item on the agenda is a question and answer session with the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). The committee will also review its work programme.
Question and Answer Session with MOPAC and the MPS
A significant portion of the meeting is dedicated to a question and answer session with representatives from MOPAC and the MPS. This session is intended to allow the committee to scrutinise the work of these bodies and discuss current issues.
The report pack indicates that the following topics are scheduled for discussion during this session:
- Palantir Pilot: The committee is expected to receive information regarding the use of technology provided by the company Palantir1 by the MPS. This includes discussions on the governance, safeguards, and independent oversight mechanisms in place to ensure its proportionate and fair use. Questions are anticipated regarding the privacy and accountability implications, including the potential for inappropriate monitoring, algorithmic bias, and overreliance on automated risk flagging. The reputational risks associated with contracting with a company that has faced scrutiny, and the adequacy of current thresholds for mayoral involvement in such contracts, are also likely to be raised.
- Live Facial Recognition (LFR) Technology: The committee is scheduled to discuss the use of Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology by the MPS. This will include consideration of whether its use will be expanded across London following a High Court ruling. The potential for LFR to be used at protests, the decision-making process for its deployment at different events, and the implications of its use on public perception and potential for two-tier policing are expected to be covered. The effectiveness of LFR in keeping Londoners safer and lessons learned from past cases of misidentification will also be on the agenda.
- Recruitment and Retention of Metropolitan Police Officers: The committee's work programme includes a rapporteurship on the recruitment and retention of Metropolitan Police Officers, with Emma Best AM appointed to lead this investigation. The committee is expected to note its work programme and delegate authority to the Chairman to agree any output arising from this rapporteurship.
- Online Fraud: A letter from the Chair of the Police and Crime Committee, Marina Ahmad AM, to the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime concerning online fraud is scheduled to be noted. This letter, agreed under delegated authority, highlights the increasing complexity of online fraud due to advancements in AI and technological changes, and the need for enhanced awareness campaigns and victim support. The letter calls for a public health-style messaging campaign and for MOPAC to renew funding for The Cyber Helpline2.
- Police and Crime Committee Work Programme: The committee will review its work programme, which outlines planned discussions and investigations for the coming months. This includes scheduled meetings on topics such as grooming gangs in London and further question and answer sessions.
The meeting will also address administrative items, including apologies for absence, declarations of interests, and the confirmation of previous minutes. A summary list of actions from previous meetings will be presented, along with an update on actions taken under delegated authority.
