Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Shropshire and are not the council. About us
The Pensions Committee of Shropshire Council is scheduled to convene on Friday, 19 June 2026. The meeting's agenda includes discussions on pensions administration monitoring, governance, and corporate governance, with a significant portion of the meeting expected to be held in private to discuss exempt information.
Pensions Administration Monitoring
A report from the Pensions Administration Manager is scheduled for review, providing an update on the performance and operational aspects of the pensions administration team. This includes details on team workloads, ongoing projects such as Annual Benefit Statements and Pension Dashboards, and the impact of regulatory changes on the team's work. The report also outlines Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and actions being taken to address any areas not meeting targets.
Governance
The committee is set to receive a report on governance matters, which will include details of any regulatory breaches recorded in the breaches log between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026. It will also inform the committee of any stage one or stage two appeals received under the Internal Dispute Resolution Procedure (IDRP). Several fund policies are scheduled for review and potential approval, including updates to the Conflicts of Interest Policy, Data Retention Policy, Data Improvement Strategy and Workplan, and the Communications Policy. The report also outlines new governance requirements stemming from the Fit for the Future
regulatory changes.
Corporate Governance Monitoring
A report on corporate governance is scheduled, which will cover changes including the government's response to the Scheme Advisory Board's request for clarification regarding investments in conflict zones. It will also review socially responsible investment issues arising in the first quarter of 2026. Updates on the Pensions Bill, which has gained royal assent, are also included, formalising recommendations from the Fit for the Future
consultation. The report details actions taken by the fund's stewardship partners, including LGPS Central, Columbia Threadneedle Investments, and the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF).
The meeting will also address the issue of investments in conflict-affected areas, noting the government's position that decisions on boycotts, divestment, and sanctions are matters of UK foreign policy for central government. The report indicates that the fund continues to work with stewardship partners to ensure companies operating in impacted areas have appropriate policies in place.
Further discussions are expected regarding the Pensions Bill 2026 and its implications for the Local Government Pension Scheme, including changes to pooling arrangements, investment strategy publication, and governance requirements such as knowledge and skills for committee members, the appointment of an LGPS Senior Officer, and an Independent Person.
The meeting will also include the election of a Chairman and the appointment of a Vice-Chairman for the forthcoming year. Members of the public will have limited access to the meeting, and those wishing to attend are advised to email democracy@shropshire.gov.uk to check availability. The meeting is also scheduled to be livestreamed.
