The Chambers Institution Trust met on Tuesday 14 April 2026 to discuss the progress of the Chambers Institution project. Key updates included the ongoing decamp process and the establishment of the 'Friends of Chambers Institution' group. The meeting also moved into a private session to discuss the Phase 2 feasibility study, business plan, and a Memorandum of Understanding, with plans for public consultation to follow.
Current Project Update
Councillor Robin Tatler, Chair of the Chambers Institution Trust, provided a brief update on the current project. The decamp process is proceeding as planned, with communications having been issued to the media. The project is reported to be on track with its first phase.
Friends of Chambers Institution Update
Gareth Smith, the new Chair of the 'Friends of Chambers Institution', reported on the group's recent activities. He, along with trustees Marshall Douglas and David Robertson, have held preliminary board meetings. A key outcome was the agreement for Gareth Smith to continue as Chair of the 'Friends' and to act as an observer on the Chambers Institution Trust. The group has also agreed on necessary immediate actions, including setting up a bank account and reviewing a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chambers Institution Trust. This MOU is nearing finalisation and is intended as a starting point for cooperation, specifically for Phase 1 fundraising, with plans to develop it further as the business plan progresses. The next steps for the 'Friends' include gathering membership and expanding the board with additional trustees. They also anticipate having a presence at the forthcoming public consultation.
Public Consultation for Phase 2
Following the private session, it was announced that public consultation for the next phase of the project is planned. Two dates have been scheduled for this: the afternoon and evening of Monday, 13 May, and Saturday, 16 May, from approximately 10 am to 4 pm. Both events will be held at the Borough Hall. These consultations will follow the agreement on the Phase 2 feasibility study and business plan, as well as the Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations.
