Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Wiltshire and are not the council. About us
The Westbury Area Board meeting scheduled for 3 June 2026 was set to cover a range of community matters, including the allocation of funding for local projects, updates from key partners, and the appointment of representatives to various groups. A significant portion of the agenda was dedicated to considering applications for Community Area Grants, Youth Grants, and Older and Vulnerable People Grants, with a total of £37,210 available across these streams.
Area Board Funding
The board was scheduled to consider several applications for funding. Among the Area Board Initiatives, Future Sound of Westbury
requested £2,500 for a youth music event, and the Westbury Town Sustainability Fete
sought £2,000 to host an event focused on environmental projects and a traditional fete for older and vulnerable adults.
In the Community Area Grants category, Westbury United Youth and Development FC applied for £5,000 towards a changing facility for their girls' football programme. The Laverton Institute Trust requested £1,401 for the refurbishment of their William Room, and Westbury Yarn Bombers sought £2,149 for a community art installation and a poppy veil tribute.
For Youth Grants, Westbury Youth Club applied for £5,000 to cover core costs for their weekly youth club sessions.
Community Spotlight and Partner Updates
The meeting included a Community Spotlight
segment, intended to highlight positive community initiatives or feedback from previous grant awards, with specific mention of Future Sound of Westbury
and the Digital Literacy Project.
Key partners were scheduled to provide updates. These included a Spring 2026 report from Wiltshire Police on Violence Against Women and Girls, a monthly update from Community First for April 2026, and briefing notes on the Connect to Work Programme and Skills Bootcamps,
a call to action from Wessex Community Action regarding pressures on the voluntary and community sector, a briefing on the Wiltshire Faith Communities Network, and the launch of the Wiltshire Community Lottery.
Appointments and Local Highways
The board was also set to appoint lead members to various Outside Bodies and working groups, including Environment Lead, Youth Lead, and a Lead Member for the Local Highways and Footpath Improvement Group (LHFIG). The minutes and recommendations from the LHFIG meeting held on 30 April 2026 were also to be considered.
Local Highways and Footpath Improvement Group (LHFIG)
The LHFIG meeting on 30 April 2026 had addressed numerous local highway and footpath issues. Discussions included concerns about footpath chicane width in Westbury, parking issues in Dilton Marsh, and speeding on Frogmore Road, Slag Lane, and Hawkeridge Road in Westbury, with recommendations for Speed Indication Devices (SIDs). Other matters included potential weight restrictions on Court Lane in Bratton due to HGV traffic, visibility concerns at the Tinhead Road/B3098 junction in Edington, and pedestrian safety issues on Station Approach in Westbury. The group also reviewed progress on various street name plate and dropped kerb installations across the area.
Action Plan Updates
Updates on the Area Board's local action plan priorities were also scheduled. These priorities, established on 11 March 2026, included supporting health and wellbeing for older and vulnerable adults, harnessing the benefits of local assets like the White Horse, a Dyslexia Awareness Raising Campaign, creating a local sports clubs network, and continuing to support positive youth activities. Progress reports indicated that Techy-Tea-Parties
had commenced, and discussions were underway for a Future Sound of Westbury
event.
