The Merton Design Review Panel was scheduled to consider a pre-application for a significant redevelopment project in Mitcham town centre. The panel's review focused on updated plans for the site, which had previously received a RED
verdict.
Redevelopment of Mitcham Morrisons Site
The primary item scheduled for discussion was the pre-application for the redevelopment of the Mitcham Morrisons site, located at Majestic Way in Mitcham town centre. The proposal, identified by case number 23/P2886 and overseen by Case Officer Wendy Wong-Chang, involves the redevelopment of the existing supermarket, multi-storey car park, and ten retail units into a residential-led mixed-use development. This was a review of updated plans following a previous assessment by the Panel on 26 February 2025, which had resulted in a RED
verdict.
The report pack indicated that the site is subject to archaeological considerations, specifically Tier 2 Archaeology, and is designated as Site Allocation Mi8 within the council's development plan. The agenda outlined a detailed schedule for this item, including a precis of the scheme by the case officer, a presentation by the applicant team, and subsequent questions and review by the Panel. The outcome of the review was to be summarised with a RAG (Red, Amber, Green) verdict.
The Development Plan policy considerations relevant to this scheme, as outlined in the agenda, did not include any designated conservation areas, listed buildings, Metropolitan Open Land, or nature conservation or open space designations. However, it did note the presence of archaeology and its inclusion as a UDP/LDF Site Proposal.
