The North East Scotland Agriculture Advisory Group met on Wednesday 9 September 2026. The meeting was scheduled to include presentations on key agricultural issues, including sector challenges, organic developments, and agri-tourism. Discussions were also planned regarding the current crisis in the pig farming sector.

Sector Overlook, Key Issues and Challenges in North East

Iain Macdonald from Quality Meat Scotland was scheduled to deliver a presentation on the sector's current landscape, focusing on key issues and challenges within the North East of Scotland.

Developments and Increased Organics in Scotland

David McKay of Soil Association Scotland was due to present on developments in organic farming across Scotland, with a particular focus on the increase in organic practices.

On-Farm Agri-Tourism Business Growth

Calum Johnston from SAC was scheduled to provide insights and guidance on fostering business growth in agri-tourism, specifically for on-farm enterprises.

Industry Report and Around Table Round Up

This item was scheduled to include an industry report and a round table discussion. Councillor Mark Findlater had raised concerns regarding the crisis affecting the pig farming sector in North East Scotland, with some producers considering leaving the industry. It was proposed that the Group write to the Cabinet Secretary to highlight the situation and explore potential financial support. Concerns were raised by some members about the appropriateness of using underspend from the Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (LFASS) for this purpose. Mr Greer, North East Regional Chair of NFU Scotland, confirmed the severity of the crisis and supported a letter to the Cabinet Secretary, advising against the use of LFASS funding. It was agreed that the Chair and Mr Whyte would discuss the matter further with industry representatives and prepare a draft letter for members' consideration.

Public Sector Equality Duty

Members were reminded of their legal duty under section 149 of the Equality Act 2010 to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations between those who share protected characteristics and those who do not. They were also to consider the contents of any Integrated Impact Assessment (IIA) provided and take them into account when reaching decisions.
