The Executive Member for Active Travel, Transport and Highways, Adrian Betteridge, approved the implementation of a 30mph speed limit in various roads within Grazeley. This decision followed a consultation period where the vast majority of responses supported the proposal.

Executive Councillor for Active Travel, Transport and Highways, Adrian Betteridge, approved the implementation of a Traffic Regulation Order¹ to introduce a 30mph speed limit on several roads in Grazeley. The decision was made on 30 June 2026 and will take effect on 8 July 2026.

The proposal to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph was put forward to improve road safety in the village, following historical safety concerns reported by residents and in consultation with Thames Valley Police. The affected roads include parts of Lambwood Hill, Grazeley Road, Mereoak Lane, Grazeley Green Road, and the entirety of Bloomfield Hatch Lane, Church Lane, and Mortimer Road. A previous 20mph variable speed limit on Mortimer Road will remain unaffected.

A statutory consultation was undertaken, with 96 responses received. Of these, 91 (95%) were in support of the proposal, and 5 (5%) were objections. The report noted that only three of the objections were relevant to the order. Concerns raised by objectors included the potential for traffic diversion to faster nearby roads and the belief that a lower speed limit was not necessary for a rural environment.

However, the overwhelming support from residents and the council's assessment concluded that the proposal was justified and would positively contribute to the safety of the village and its road users. Many residents expressed strong support, citing numerous accidents, including fatalities, and the dangers posed by speeding vehicles, particularly near Grazeley Primary School. Local ward member Catherine Glover raised a point of ambiguity regarding Bloomfield Hatch Lane, which was clarified in the decision-making process.

The financial implications of the recommendation were noted as a capital cost of £1000 in the current financial year, with sufficient funding available. An Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) was conducted, concluding that the proposal had a low impact and did not require a full assessment, as no specific adverse impacts on individuals or groups with protected characteristics were identified during the consultation.
