Strategic Risk Management Policy and Risk Assessment

The council reviewed and agreed on an updated strategic risk management policy. This policy, last updated in 2019, now includes a risk appetite statement and direct directorate risk registers. These additions aim to provide clear accountability and strengthen risk management training and awareness for all officers. The policy is based on Welsh Government guidance, internal audit, and Audit Wales, and the council is part of the WRGA risk management network. The strategic risk register will be reviewed every six months by the Governance and Audit Committee and the Performance and Overview Committee. The policy itself will be reviewed annually. The cabinet agreed on the updated policy and the strategic risk assessment.

People Strategy

The council introduced a new people strategy aimed at supporting and developing its workforce. This strategy is part of the council's enabling strategies, alongside the financial strategy and asset management strategy. It focuses on creating a supportive environment for employees and volunteers, recognizing the importance of job satisfaction and development opportunities. The strategy includes six objectives, such as providing access to training and development, fostering an enabling culture, and using technology to improve recruitment processes. The council aims to remain an employer of choice in a competitive job market. The cabinet approved the people strategy and its associated action plan.

New Welsh Medium Primary School in Abergavenny

The council discussed the establishment of a new 420-place Welsh medium primary school in Abergavenny, including 60 part-time nursery places. The new school will be located at the site of the former Derry View Primary School, which is part of King Henry VIII's lower school. This move is seen as a success story for the Welsh language and education in the area. The council has received overwhelming support from consultees, Estyn, and EAS. The cabinet agreed to proceed with the statutory notices required for the establishment of the new school, with the notices to be published on June 17th for a 28-day period.
