The Licensing Committee of Sandwell Council convened on Monday, 10 June 2024, to discuss changes to the appointment of Licensing Sub Committees. The committee approved the changes to reflect the new membership structure, ensuring compliance with the Licensing Act 2003 and the Gambling Act 2005.

Appointment to Licensing Sub Committees

The committee sought approval for changes to the appointment of Licensing Sub Committees to align with the new membership structure approved at the Council meeting on 12 December 2023. Each sub-committee will now comprise three members when considering matters related to the Licensing Act 2003 and the Gambling Act 2005, and up to six members when dealing with applications for licences and previously granted licences under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

The Licensing Act 2003 regulates the sale and supply of alcohol, the provision of regulated entertainment, and late-night refreshment. The Gambling Act 2005 governs the regulation of gambling in Great Britain. The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 includes provisions for the licensing of private hire vehicles and hackney carriages.

Councillor J Giles, the Chair, highlighted the importance of these changes to ensure the effective discharge of licensing functions. The committee resolved to approve the changes and make the necessary appointments to the sub-committees.
