June 19, 2024 View on council websiteSummary
The Overview and Scrutiny Task Group on Suicide Bereavement and Prevention met to discuss the scope of their review and to receive a presentation on council services related to suicide prevention and bereavement. The group approved the draft scoping document and noted the information presented on the council's social prescribing service and the Suicide Prevention and Reduction Strategy Action Plan 2022-2025.
Scoping the Review
The task group discussed the scope for their review, including objectives, desired outcomes, and terms of reference. They referred to notes from an informal brainstorming meeting held on 28 March 2024, which identified several organisations that could be useful to consult. The draft scoping document was approved, and the final version will be circulated to members by email. The scoping document outlines the framework for the review.
Presentation on Council Services
Chelsea Fisher, Social Prescribing Team Leader, and Bernie Heggarty, Neighbourhood Priorities Officer, presented on the council’s social prescribing service. This service primarily assists clients with moderate mental health issues related to social isolation, housing, or financial problems. It also provides signposting for individuals in crisis or with severe mental health issues.
The presentation included the Suicide Prevention and Reduction Strategy Action Plan 2022-2025, which detailed completed actions such as:
- Sharing information with Chorley Central Primary Care Network Multi-Disciplinary Meeting to extend Amparo support to more residents.
- Updating the Chorley Council website with mental health and suicide support information.
- Raising awareness of mental health support during World Suicide Prevention Day 2023.
Upcoming events include World Suicide Prevention Event in September 2024 and World Mental Health Day in October 2023.
The presentation also mentioned the Chorley Suicide Working Group, which includes various partner organisations such as Chorley Women’s Centre, St Laurence’s Church, Lancashire Mind, and others. Councillor Samantha Martin and Councillor Aaron Beaver are also part of this group.
The task group resolved to include the information from the presentation in their final report.
