The Rushcliffe Borough Council held its annual council meeting, which was particularly special as it marked the council's 50th anniversary. The meeting included reflections on dementia support, the election of the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, and various acknowledgments and appointments.
Dementia Support
Gwyneth Owen and Dr. Jill Langridge from the Rushcliffe Dementia Communication and Support Project led a moment of reflection. They highlighted the significant impact of dementia, noting that one in three people born in the UK today will develop dementia in their lifetime. They discussed the project's achievements, including the creation of a local dementia directory, collaboration with local GP practices, and the establishment of the Rushcliffe Dementia Action Network. Their vision is to empower people living with dementia to live well and independently while supporting their carers and families.
Election of the Mayor
Councillor Andrew Andy
Brown was elected as the new Mayor of Rushcliffe for the 2024-25 civic year. He was nominated by Councillor Rex Walker and seconded by Councillor Matt Barney. Andy Brown expressed his intention to visit all corners of Rushcliffe and announced his chosen charity, SAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Families Association). He shared a personal story about meeting Chris Lewis, a former paratrooper who walked the UK coastline to raise money for SAFA.
Election of the Deputy Mayor
Councillor John Cote was elected as the Deputy Mayor. He was nominated by Councillor Richard Butler and seconded by Councillor Inglis. John Cote has a long history of community involvement and has been active in various sports and local organizations.
