Crematorium Business Plan and Fees

Joanna Hamilton, the Bereavement Services Manager and Registrar, presented the business plan for the Coychurch Crematorium. The report covered the general status of the crematorium, including employment practices, promotional activities, and sustainability efforts. Concerns about pricing in comparison to other crematoriums were also addressed. Members raised questions regarding the format of Appendix 2 and potential future costings, which were clarified by Ms Hamilton.

The committee resolved to approve the report, noting that there would be no increase in charges going forward. They also acknowledged the high approval ratings for the crematorium and expressed gratitude to the staff for their efforts.

Financial Performance 2023-24 and Proposed Revenue Budget 2024-25

Dean Jones, the Accountant - Financial, reported on the crematorium’s projected financial performance and the previous year’s financial statements, which were submitted to Audit Wales for inspection. The report highlighted a projected deficit of £933,000, significantly higher than the previously anticipated deficit of £71,000. The report also mentioned the potential cost of accommodating a future pay award.

Members posed questions about underspend on planned maintenance, employee vacancies, price differentials in gas and electricity prices, and the management and storage of financial reserves. These queries were addressed by Ms Hamilton and Mr Jones, who noted trends in utility prices, recruitment challenges, and the structure of the crematorium’s financial statements as part of Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC).

The committee approved the report, acknowledging the projected deficit and approving the revenue budget for 2024-25. It was agreed that Mr Jones would email Councillor S J Griffiths with further details.

Programme of Meetings 2024-25

Ms Hamilton presented the proposed schedule of meetings for the upcoming financial year, in compliance with the Memorandum of Agreement with the Joint Committee. The schedule included the date proposed for electing a new chairperson for the year.
