Telford and Wrekin Council's Cabinet discussed an update on the Telford Land Deal and the results of a recent resident's survey. The Cabinet voted to approve the updated proposals for the Telford Land Deal.
Telford Land Deal
The meeting opened with a presentation from an officer on the latest updates to the Telford Land Deal, a partnership between the council and Homes England to provide land for 19,000 new homes in the borough.
The officer reported that the Land Deal had already delivered 5,873 new homes and created 7,760 jobs in the borough.
The Cabinet were asked to approve an updated proposal for the Land Deal, which included plans to extend the deal for a further 5 years.
Making the case for the extension, the officer said:
The proposed extension would enable the continued successful delivery of the ambitions set out in the Deal, including delivery of new homes (including affordable homes), employment land and associated infrastructure.
Councillor Lee Carter, the Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood, Commercial Services and Regeneration, also spoke in favour of the proposal:
I think this has been one of the most significant interventions in my 25 years of living in Telford & Wrekin. It's been incredibly positive.
Councillor Carter went on to say that the government's proposed changes to national planning policy represented a threat to the deal, and that he was:
...proud that this council will stand up for our residents and we’ll carry on delivering.
The updated proposal for the Telford Land Deal was approved unanimously.
Residents' Survey Results
The Cabinet then discussed the results of the latest Telford and Wrekin Residents' Survey, which was sent out to 30,000 households across the borough.
The survey found that residents’ satisfaction with the council was generally very high, although the report did note a decline in resident satisfaction with the way the council listens to the views of local people.
The Leader of the Council, Councillor Shaun Davies, said that he welcomed the survey results:
It’s really positive that so many people took the time to fill in our survey and tell us what they think – I’d like to thank them for doing so.
Councillor Davies also said that the council would be:
...looking very closely at what residents have told us in this survey about how we can continue to improve, particularly when it comes to listening to our residents, so we can ensure we are providing the best possible services for our communities.
