Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Staffordshire Moorlands and are not the council. About us
High Peak Borough Council have decided to increase the rent on their garage plots. They also agreed to change the garage licence to include an annual Retail Price Index linked rent increase. There were no alternative options considered.
Garage Plot Rental Increase
The Council decided to increase the rent on all of their garage plots from £90 per year (plus VAT) to £200 per year (plus VAT) from 1 January 2025.
They also decided to increase the rent on the garage plots on Elnor Lane, Whaley Bridge, to bring them into line with the rent on their other garage plots.
Finally, they decided to change the garage licence so that the rent will increase annually in line with the Retail Price Index every two years. This change will take effect on 1 April each year.
The report considered in the meeting set out a number of alternative options for increasing the rent, including increasing the rent by a fixed amount each year, or increasing the rent in line with inflation. However, it was decided that the best option was to increase the rent in line with the Retail Price Index.
The report set out the current circumstances and charging regime for garage plots and recommended the implementation of a rent increase on Council-owned garage plats and a change to the garage licence to include an annual upwards only RPI linked (Retail Price Index) increase. - Garage Plot Rental Increase_v1 AEM
The report authorises an increase to £200 per annum, but this does not appear to have been considered during the meeting.
