Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Milton Keynes and are not the council. About us
The Milton Keynes Youth Council (MKYC) met to discuss feedback from the Youth Mayor event, updates from council representatives, mental health considerations, and action group activities. The council also held elections for the UK Youth Parliament members (MYPs). Finally, the council agreed to support the MK World Cup, after a unanimous vote.
UK Youth Parliament Elections
The MKYC held elections for the Milton Keynes Youth Council UK Youth Parliament members (MYPs).
Feedback from Youth Mayor Event
The council discussed feedback from the Youth Mayor (YM) event held on 5 July 2025. Points raised included:
- The event's timing was well-received.
- The event was youth-led and had a
vibrant feel
due to the hosting by Adeola. - There was some confusion regarding the separate agendas for the YM event and the formal meeting that followed.
- Marie Bradburn felt the YM event was well-run and enjoyable.
- Garry Lake and Mac Heath noted that the break during voting worked well.
- The quality of speeches had improved.
- Reminders to use the side entrance on Saturdays should be shared for future events.
Chair's Updates
The Chair, Ellie, provided updates on several items:
- Two new handbooks, a Chair handbook and a YM handbook, have been created in collaboration with the mayor and will soon be shared with the council.
- Chair elections will be held at the next formal meeting on 6 September, with shadowing opportunities available for interested members.
- Application forms for the DMYP elections will be available after the meeting.
- Cody and Bisam attended the children and young people's scrutiny committee on 25 July, speaking on Furze House and SEND1.
- Cody attended the SEND event in the civic chamber and spoke with teams from social services, CHUMS2 (young carers), and family centres. CHUMS would like to meet with the MKYC, and Lisa Thompson will arrange this.
- Lisa Thompson has shared a schedule of cabinet and full council meetings with all representatives. Council representatives are to identify dates they are available to attend, and to read the relevant motions and agendas in advance of the meetings.
- Adeola, Mack, and Cody attended the environment and scrutiny committee, where they consulted on issues affecting young people, such as dangerous parking outside schools and street lighting safety. Information on the Milton Keynes City Council (MKCC) 'Safe Route' was shared.
- Adeola and Rohan attended the Parish forum, where they shared ideas on what young people would like to see in their local areas, such as feeling safe and having more accessible spaces and activities.
Support for MK World Cup
The Culture, Media, and Sport action group, led by Annabella, received an invitation from Sam Crooks for the council to support the MK World Cup. The council voted unanimously to support this, and Annabella and Lisa Thompson will respond to Sam Crooks.
Wellbeing and Mental Health Report
Tito, the Wellbeing and Mental Health lead, shared an update on the MKYC MH report, which he has been working on with Lisa Britton and James Dove. The considerations of change were:
- The wording of
young people experiencing mental health during exam stress and other impacts
should be changed to acknowledge it aspoor mental health
. - The council will rework the wording in the documents to be shared with services and organisations.
Other Matters Discussed
- The MKYC will support the MK TEDX youth event at the MK Gallery on 12 August, with Parisa coordinating volunteers and publicity. Maggie, a former Youth Mayor, will be one of the speakers.
- A MKYC social event will be held on 12 August at Unity Community Space, focusing on White Ribbon craft for the Pillar at the MK Rose.
- Ellie and Jonty have been working on improving the MKYC group chat on WhatsApp to make it easier to use for sharing notes and calendar dates.
