Here's a summary of the scheduled discussions for the Spelthorne Borough Council extraordinary meeting on 4 September 2025. The main item for consideration was a motion regarding the use of the Stanwell Hall Hotel as an asylum seeker centre. Councillors were also expected to address apologies for absence and declarations of interest.
Motion Regarding Stanwell Hall Hotel
A motion proposed by Councillor John Boughtflower, Leader of the Conservative Group, and seconded by Councillor Matthew Lee, Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group, called for the council to engage legal services to seek an interim injunction against the owner of the Stanwell Hall Hotel to stop its use as an asylum seeker centre.
The motion referenced a decision made by Mr Justice Eyre, who granted Epping Forest District Council an injunction to cease the use of the Bell Hotel in its district as an asylum seeker centre. The motion stated:
In light of the decision made on 19 August by Mr Justice Eyre, granting Epping Forest District Council an injunction to cease the inappropriate use of the Bell Hotel in its district as an asylum seekers centre. That this council, without delay, engages the services of the KC used by Epping Forest Council (or another suitable experienced KC) to represent Spelthorne Borough Council in obtaining the same interim injunction against the owner of the Stanwell Hall Hotel and to stop its use as an asylum seeker centre.
All councillors were asked to support the motion.
