Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Newport and are not the council. About us
In a meeting of the Newport Council's Formal Council Questions and Responses, Councillor Routley raised concerns about the unfinished surface of Bramble Way, but Councillor R Howells responded that while the council is investing significantly in road improvements, Bramble Way does not meet the criteria for immediate resurfacing based on the council's Highway Asset Management Plan (HAMP).
Bramble Way Road Surface
Councillor Routley raised a question on behalf of the residents of Bramble Way regarding the completion of the road's top surface. They noted that the road was celebrating its 21st birthday and that the funds for the top layer were allocated some time ago. Councillor Routley expressed concern that the project might be delayed indefinitely due to funding issues, and stated that residents would like to celebrate the road's anniversary with the completion of the surface.
Councillor R Howells responded by highlighting the significant highway maintenance backlog faced by the council, which they placed at £119 million, as outlined in the council's Highway Asset Management Plan (HAMP). They acknowledged the £6 million investment in road improvements but stated that it was not possible to resurface every road that needed it.
Councillor R Howells explained that inspections are carried out according to the council's HAMP and Highway Maintenance Manual, with funding allocated based on these inspections. While acknowledging that the surface of Bramble Way may be aesthetically poor,
they stated that it is in good structural condition and does not meet the council's defect intervention criteria.
