Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Newport and are not the council. About us
During the Formal Council Questions and Responses meeting on 8 September 2025, Councillor Evans asked about improvements to the Coed Melyn Park play area, and Councillor Forsey responded that while investment has been made in other play areas, there are no current plans to update the Coed Melyn Park play area, although some funds are available for the Allt-yr-yn Heights play area.
Coed Melyn Park Play Area
Councillor Evans asked the Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Waste and Recycling if there were any plans to update and improve the play area at the bottom of Coed Melyn Park between Vancouver Drive and Bassaleg Road.
Councillor Forsey responded that while the cabinet has allocated £2.5M to repair and replace play areas in Newport, and that this has delivered improvements to 26 facilities, it is not currently possible to address all the play areas that the council would like to.
Councillor Forsey did note that some section 106 money1 is available for the Allt-yr-yn Heights play area located on the other side of Councillor Evans' ward, and that the council will be consulting on this shortly.

Section 106 agreements, also known as planning obligations, are legal agreements between local authorities and developers; these are used to mitigate the impact of new developments on the community and infrastructure. ↩
