Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Newport and are not the council. About us
During the Newport City Council meeting on 25 September 2025, Councillor Mogford asked the Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Waste & Recycling, Councillor Forsey, for an update on the reopening of public toilets, a project for which £15,000 was allocated in the council's budget. Councillor Forsey responded by stating that the council is not legally required to provide public toilets, but does so in some areas, and that a trial is underway at Beechwood Park.
Public Toilets
Councillor Mogford questioned Councillor Forsey, the Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Waste & Recycling, about the progress of the council's plan to reopen public toilets, for which £15,000 was allocated in the budget. Councillor Mogford referred to media reports that quoted a Newport City Council spokesperson as saying that the funding was sufficient
and that plans are progressing
.
Councillor Forsey responded that while Newport City Council is not legally required to provide public toilets, it does offer them in some areas outside the city centre, in addition to those already available in Friars Walk and the Kingsway Centre. Friars Walk is a shopping centre in Newport, and Kingsway Centre is another shopping centre in the city.
Councillor Forsey also stated that a trial is currently underway at Beechwood Park to assess the need for public toilets in that location.
