The Islington Council Planning Committee met to discuss and approve a planning application for the Bemerton Estate South, involving the demolition of garages and construction of new dwellings and community space. The committee approved the application with amendments to ensure flexibility in the provision of affordable housing and to include resident engagement in the design of play spaces and landscaping.

Annual Council

Annual Council - Thursday, 15th May, 2025 7.15 pm

At the Annual Council meeting, Councillor Jason Jackson was elected as Mayor of Islington, becoming the first black man to hold the post. Councillor Rosalyn Ngongoro was appointed as Deputy Mayor, and councillors were assigned to various committees and outside organisations. The council also formally appointed Paul Clarke as Interim Section 151 Officer[^1].

The Islington Council Executive met to discuss the future of two primary schools, approve funding allocations, and adopt a new planning document, among other items. St. Jude and St. Paul's Church of England Primary School and Highbury Quadrant Primary School will both close in August 2025, while the council also agreed to a new dementia strategy and a new set of guidelines for developers.
