It is important that we listen to the voices of our children in care and care leavers and that we act on what they tell us.

Councillor Smith also praised the work of the Virtual School in supporting children in care to achieve their ambitions. The Virtual School is an initiative designed to provide additional educational support to children in care, ensuring they have the same opportunities as their peers.

Participation in Elections

Another critical discussion point was how to encourage greater participation of Children in Care and Care Leavers in the forthcoming local elections. Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, the Leader of the Council, acknowledged existing challenges in this area and stated:

We recognise that we need to do more to engage with our care experienced young people, particularly in relation to voting.

She committed to working with council officers to explore ways to improve participation rates among this demographic.

Supporting Young People to Move On from Care

The Panel also addressed the challenges of finding suitable move-on accommodation for Care Leavers, particularly in light of the ongoing cost of living crisis. They discussed the crucial role of foster carers in helping young people transition from care to independent living. Councillor Richard Dunbar, Executive Member for Children's Services, emphasised:

Our foster carers play a vital role in helping young people to make a successful transition to adulthood. We need to ensure they have the support they need to do this important job.

He acknowledged that more efforts are needed to support Care Leavers into independent living, ensuring they have the resources and stability necessary for a successful transition.
