Purpose
Approval to prepare and advertise a Traffic
Regulation Order
A public highway, maintained in character as a rough track, extends
across Ilkley Moor from its southern boundary at Whetstone Gate to
Wells Road in Ilkley. Due to regular anti-social off-road driving
on the moor and fly-tipping – both of which impact on the
protected moorland area; it is proposed to impose a Traffic
Regulation Order on the section from Whetstone Gate as far as the
access track to Silver Wells cottage at the
Ilkley end (approximately 1.5 Kms). This is indicated in red on the
plan overleaf. The TRO would have the effect of restricting access
by motor vehicles but would allow continued use by pedestrians,
horse riders and cyclists. The proposal has the support of local
police, residents around Silver Wells and Wells Road area and the
Friends of Ilkley Moor. Friends of Ilkley Moor have offered to
contribute up to _ towards the cost, with
the remainder of the costs being covered by Countryside and Rights
of Way Service.
Total costs including measures to prevent access is estimated at
@£10k
If initial consultation results in a high level of objection, the
proposal would be brought
back for further consideration and at that point can either be
progressed or abandoned.
