Melton Borough Council held an extraordinary meeting to elect a new leader following the resignation of Councillor Pip Allnatt. After a tied vote between Councillor Mike Brown and Councillor Ronan Browne, the Mayor, Councillor Siggy Atherton, used her casting vote to elect Councillor Ronan Browne as the new leader.
Election of Council Leader
The primary purpose of this extraordinary meeting was to elect a new leader for Melton Borough Council for the remainder of the current term. This followed the resignation of Councillor Pip Allnatt due to ill health. Two nominations were put forward: Councillor Mike Brown, proposed by Councillor Margaret Glancy and seconded by Councillor Sarah Cox, and Councillor Ronan Browne, proposed by Councillor Robert Child and seconded by Councillor Ian Atherton.
Both nominees, Councillor Brown and Councillor Browne, delivered speeches outlining their vision and suitability for the role. Councillor Brown, representing the Independent and Labour Administration, highlighted his experience in trade union work and his commitment to teamwork, inclusivity, and continuing the current administration's delivery of services. He emphasised his confidence in his ability to represent the council and residents at all levels, referencing his experience in managing complex situations and his pride in the administration's achievements, particularly in housing services.
Councillor Browne, representing the Conservative Group, presented his case based on his extensive experience in local government, the NHS, and various public bodies. He stressed the importance of stability and continuity during the upcoming local government reorganisation and pledged to ensure cross-party involvement and adequate engagement with parish councillors. He also outlined plans for continuing existing projects, reviewing assets, and supporting economic investment and community engagement.
Following the speeches, other councillors contributed to the debate. Councillor Simon Lumley raised concerns about housing issues, including the accommodation of illegal immigrants and the proliferation of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), and called for a halt to wind turbine and solar panel installations on prime farmland. Councillor Christopher Evans expressed disappointment that an independent leader could not be found and argued for the need for experience during the transition to a unitary authority, endorsing Councillor Browne. Councillor Higgins raised concerns about the judgment and associations of candidates, referencing the council's code of conduct and the need for a safe council culture, though she did not name specific candidates. Councillor Helen Cliff spoke in favour of Councillor Mike Brown, citing his union background as beneficial for bringing people together during the local government reorganisation.
The meeting proceeded to a vote, which resulted in a tie between Councillor Mike Brown and Councillor Ronan Browne. As Mayor, Councillor Siggy Atherton used her casting vote to elect Councillor Ronan Browne as the new Leader of Melton Borough Council. Councillor Browne stated his intention to announce his cabinet in the coming days and reach out to the leaders of other groups to foster collaboration. Councillor Brown expressed his disappointment but pledged to work together if possible.
