Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Bromley and are not the council. About us
The Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) meeting scheduled for Wednesday 2 April 2025 was set to cover national and local updates on Religious Education (RE), a review of the current syllabus, and the council's action plan. The meeting's agenda also included discussions on the NASACRE conference, Ofsted report card consultations, and the ongoing syllabus review process.
National Updates
The council was scheduled to receive updates on national developments concerning Religious Education. This included information from the NASACRE conference, which provides guidance and support for SACREs across the country. Discussions were also anticipated regarding RE's role in the Assessment and Curriculum Review, with reference to an interim report on reforms. Furthermore, attendees were expected to consider a consultation on the Ofsted Report Card, which outlines how Ofsted inspects education.
Local Updates
On a local level, the meeting was set to review the progress of the Calendar Competition, an initiative likely aimed at engaging pupils with religious and worldviews. An update was also scheduled on the Inter-faith Dialogue Conference and Showcase Event, planned for 18th June 2025. This event appears to be a significant part of the council's efforts to foster understanding between different faiths and worldviews among young people. Additionally, information was to be shared from the In Conversation with NASACRE London
event held on 13th March 2025, which provides a platform for London-based SACREs to share best practices and challenges.
Syllabus Review
A key item on the agenda was the review of the current Bromley RE Syllabus. The report pack indicated that the process for reviewing the Agreed Syllabus, which is required every five years, had already begun. This review aims to ensure the syllabus remains relevant and effective in promoting religious education and inter-faith dialogue. The council was expected to discuss the process and the outcomes of an Agreed Syllabus Conference, where proposed changes would be debated and voted upon.
SACRE Action Plan
The meeting was also scheduled to review the SACRE Action Plan for the period of September 2024 to September 2025. This plan outlines the council's priorities and activities for the year, including initiatives such as teacher training sessions, the development of inter-faith dialogue resources, and communication strategies with schools. The report pack indicated that some actions, such as the first primary and secondary network meetings and the launch of the calendar competition, were already complete. Other actions, including the syllabus review and support for Key Stage 4 and 5, were still in progress or to be confirmed.
The meeting was also to include standard procedural items such as apologies for absence, declarations of interest, and compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The minutes of the previous meeting held on 4th December 2024 were also to be reviewed.
