The Alexandra Palace and Park Consultative Committee met to discuss the chief executive's report, which included updates on entertainment and culture, climate change resilience, heritage asset protection, green space preservation, archive protection, community engagement, and overall resilience. The committee was also scheduled to review and provide feedback on applications related to solar panels for the boathouse, secondary glazing for the CUFOS building, and shutters for the sports pavilion.
Chief Executive's Report
Emma Dagnes OBE, Chief Executive of Alexandra Park & Palace, provided a report updating the committee on the progress of the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust, aligning with the trust's vision to Create a Sustainable Home for All That We Do.
The report highlighted progress across several goals:
Entertainment and Culture: The Summer Series, featuring acts like the Teskey Brothers and the Kaiser Chiefs, took place in July. Alexandra Palace and Wise Children co-produced Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest. Market research was conducted to better understand audiences, and Premier PR was appointed as the new PR agency. The ice rink, boating lake, and Phoenix bar and Pizzeria continued operations.
Climate Change Resilience: Projects awarded grants from the Haringey Community Carbon Fund, including installing solar panels on the boathouse and secondary glazing in the CUFOS (old station) building, were underway. Departments involved in theatre operations were working towards Theatre Green Book guidance, and the events team was using the NAA Green Guide. The London Squash Classic tournament reduced truck deliveries by using a flat-packed court.
Heritage Asset Protection: Repairs to the Boating Lake jetty and refurbishment of the East Court cafe were completed. The East Court cafe refurbishment included:
The complete removal of the temporary cafe infrastructure. In its place, a new floated floor system was installed, designed to carry all necessary café services within its structure. This upgrade has eliminated the trip hazards previously caused by surface-laid cables and pipes, creating a seamless and safer environment for both staff and visitors.
Green Lung for London: Meadow cutting was carried out in mid-August. Contractors created a raised footpath alongside new ponds in the wetland area. The Alexandra Park Club planned to replace the shutters on the pavilion and add their club logo. The play area was closed for repairs, and the crowns of the four large oaks were cut back.
Archives and Stories: Three new archive volunteers enlisted, and one completed the listing of Val Paley's collection. An application for the Business Archives Council cataloguing grant was submitted. Volunteers were working on articles for the Hornsey Historical Society. A project plan was submitted for the celebration of 35 years of the Ice Rink. Sales and curatorial teams were collaborating to commission a virtual tour of the historic BBC Wing from Headbox.
Community Engagement: Various projects were delivered, including an outdoor Shakespeare performance of As You Like It. The Young Creatives Network participated in DJ Masterclasses and led the creation of the annual Skate Jam festival. Community Focus sessions were delivered in the outdoor learning area. The Biblio Buzz Library Ceremony was held, and a pop-up camera obscura installation was set up. Preparations were underway for La Feria and the Haringey Age Well Festival.
Overall Resilience: The new individual giving programme was launched, including the Founding Ally Pally Patrons scheme. Trust and statutory fundraising continued. Potential capital projects for the next phase of restoration were scoped and prioritised. Work was underway to develop the charity's Strategic Plan. Construction began for the Summit, Alexandra Palace Rooftop Adventure. IT and network resilience were improved, including replacing the Artifax event planning system with Infor and migrating to SharePoint/OneDrive.
Derelict Spaces: Phase One of the Boating Lake improvement programme was completed. Work continued to build the case for an Expression of Interest application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Northeast Office Building Project.
New Partnerships: Lease arrangements for the relocation of Haringey Music Service were being finalised. A strategic meeting was scheduled between Alexandra Palace, North London Music Hub, and BBC Concert Orchestra.
Planning Applications
The committee was asked to comment on planning applications relating to:
- Solar Panels (Boathouse): A heritage statement was included in the report pack concerning the proposal to install photovoltaic (PV) panels on the flat roof of the Boathouse building to generate electricity for the use of the café and the Boathouse itself as a sustainable source of energy. The report stated that:
The proposal supports long-term sustainability and energy efficiency in a manner that is sensitive to local character and historic significance. The PV panels will provide a renewable energy source for the café and Boathouse, supporting their continued community use while aligning with Alexandra Palace's wider environmental goals.
Secondary Glazing (CUFOS): As part of the climate change resilience programme, secondary glazing was planned for installation in the CUFOS (old station) building.
Shutters (Sports Pavilion): The Alexandra Park Club planned to replace the shutters on the pavilion and add their club logo. The designs require advertising consent. The report pack included drawings of the proposed shutters with the Alexandra Park Sports Club logo.
