January 22, 2026 at 7:30 pm View on council websiteSummary
The New and Old Malden Neighbourhood Committee was scheduled to discuss several key issues, including traffic improvements at Fountain Roundabout and the introduction of new pedestrian crossings. The committee was also set to consider applications for community grants and review planned highway maintenance.
Fountain Roundabout Improvements
The committee was scheduled to consider options for improving Fountain Roundabout, with a report presenting an analysis of potential enhancements. The intention was to seek approval to progress two preferred options for detailed traffic modelling, design development, and subsequent public consultation. Additionally, the committee was to consider a petition and a requisition received in relation to Fountain Roundabout.
New Pedestrian Crossings
Two proposals for new zebra crossings were scheduled for discussion. The first concerned the junction of Galsworthy Road, Coombe Lane West, Gloucester Road, and Coombe Road, where a request had been made for a pedestrian facility. The second proposal was for a new zebra crossing on Coombe Lane West, outside house numbers 54/56. This location forms a boundary with another neighbourhood committee, and the proposal aimed to address feedback from local residents requesting improved road crossing facilities to encourage walking, particularly for school journeys. The report highlighted that six collisions, including two serious and four minor injuries, had occurred on Coombe Lane West in the five years prior to the meeting.
Planned Highway Maintenance and Street Lighting
The committee was scheduled to review the planned highway maintenance and street lighting capital programme for 2026/27. This agenda item included noting maintenance works carried out in the previous year, 2025/26, and consulting the Neighbourhood Committees on the proposed programme for the upcoming year.
Community Grants
Applications for Neighbourhood Community Grants (NCG) were to be considered. The report pack indicated that three applications were to be reviewed:
- Kingston Tamil Heritage Group: Applied for £1,100 to support the Kingston Tamil Heritage and Harvest Festival, a celebration of Tamil culture and heritage.
- Kingston Giving (formerly Kingston Charitable Foundation): Applied for £3,000 to support its Catalyst Grants programme, which aims to provide grants of £150-£300 to low-income residents to support their mental health and wellbeing.
- Oxygen: Applied for £3,000 to support its mentoring programme, which aims to assist marginalised, disadvantaged, and isolated young people through direct mentoring and social action opportunities.
Other Scheduled Items
The agenda also included time for public question time and the consideration of petitions. A report from the Neighbourhood Manager was also scheduled, along with a presentation from the Community Safety Team. Any urgent items authorised by the Chair and the potential exclusion of the press and public for specific agenda items were also listed.
