The Islington Planning Committee, comprising ten elected councillors, is responsible for making decisions on major planning applications across the borough. These applications include significant developments such as mineral extraction, waste development, or the creation of 10 or more new homes, buildings with over 1,000 square metres of floor space, or developments on sites of 0.5 hectares or more.
Smaller applications are handled by two sub-committees or by the Service Director under delegated authority, though the main committee can occasionally decide on these. Residents can make representations on applications at committee meetings, subject to the Chair's discretion and time limits.
