The Council met on Wednesday 10 July 2024 to confer the Freedom of Entry of the Royal Borough upon the 256 (City of London and Southeast) Multi-Role Medical Regiment. This decision was made unanimously by the councillors present.
Conferment of Freedom of Entry to 256 (City of London and Southeast) Multi-Role Medical Regiment
The Council resolved to confer the Freedom of Entry of the Royal Borough upon the 256 (City of London and Southeast) Multi-Role Medical Regiment. This honour grants the regiment the right to march through the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames on all ceremonial occasions with bayonets fixed, colours flying, and bands playing. The decision was made in recognition of the regiment's long and intimate association with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
The conferment follows a reorganisation of the unit, which was previously awarded the Freedom of Entry by the Council in March 2009 as the 256 (City of London) Field Hospital. The 1972 Local Government Act empowers authorities to award such honours to individuals or corporate bodies.
In addition to conferring the Freedom of Entry, the Council also agreed that arrangements would be made, in consultation with the Mayor, Councillor Liz Green, for an illuminated scroll to commemorate the honour to be presented to the Regiment on a suitable occasion. The vote on this matter required a two-thirds majority of those present and voting, and it was passed unanimously.
